Traffic Control

Traffic management is critical for ensuring a safe worksite, protecting both the public and your workers. It is imperative that only ISGM-approved traffic control suppliers are engaged for ISGM activities.

Traffic Control Panel

  • From Sunday 1 February 2015, if your company utilises traffic control whilst supplying services to ISGM, the traffic control company must be an approved ISGM traffic control panel member. Please note: If your company engages a non-panel member, your as-built claim may not be verified.
  • The full listing of approved traffic control panel members for your region is available on CMS Contractor Portal under Documents / HSEQ Management System / HSE Safe Systems of Work / Procedures / Traffic & Pedestrian Management / Active Traffic Control Companies.
  • If your company provides your own traffic control and is not on the panel, please contact your Regional Contract Manager to discuss the requirements for becoming an approved ISGM traffic control panel member. In the interim, please ensure that you use a company from the approved panel.

Traffic Control claims

As communicated in previous The Cable Chronicles, Telstra has advised that all claims for Traffic Control require photographic evidence. For claims to be accepted and processed, your company must include photographic evidence of the traffic control with the as-built pack, noting the following:

  • All ZZ-2c Traffic Control require clear photos on site showing the traffic control occurring from each street angle.
  • The Invoice for ZZ-2c should provide a breakdown of work – the dates traffic control completed, the number of workers and the number of hours.
  • The TMP showing the ZZ-2c job location should be provided within the as-built.

For your reference

The Traffic Management procedure is available on CMS Contractor Portal under Documents / HSEQ Management System / HSE Safe Systems of Work / Procedures / Traffic Management Procedure.

We’ve had some wonderful feedback from customers and Telstra on the performance of subcontracting companies. Congratulations to the companies and ISGM team members listed who have recently been commended!

Telstra feedback for Kelly Brown, ISGM  - “Nothing is too difficult for Kelly and most times comes back with a better outcome. Kelly has been instrumental in providing solutions to two complaints, which has been well received by both customers. I know I am in good hands and Kelly should be recognised for turning detractors to  potential advocates.”

Telstra feedback for Peter Mazza, Team Manager, ISGM  - “Customers at Parkes had no phone services and this was a high priority. Peter was able to mobilise hauling and jointing subcontractors from Sydney. Please pass on my appreciation to your team for mobilising on short notice, great work.”

Congratulations to our iSTAR winners for January. These subcontracting companies have gone above and beyond the normal expectations with customer service, quality work, productivity and team work.

Southern — Electrofuse: Nick Provost

“Nick came back from leave early to assist with a volume hold cable fault that had been caused by a burst water main in Heidelberg. The road could not be repaired until the damaged conduit had been repaired, so Nick’s quick response was invaluable. He also had to work in with Yarra Valley Water’s contractors, who were repairing their plant at the same time. Telstra management were also on site and Nick’s work was totally professional at all times.” Rob Ord, Team Manager, Southern

Central — Beeman Communications: Steve Hurford

Steve Hurford“We received a CEO customer complaint that was escalated to Steve of Beeman Communications. Within 24hrs, Steve was onsite to connect the customer in a Telstra Velocity Estate. Unfortunately, there were a number of blockers due to some shortfalls in the previously constructed network. Working with the ISGM TM and local Telstra Digital TM, Steve identified a solution, sourced the material, kept the customer informed and had the service activated within 2 days. Steve continues to provide a professional service in all his dealings with ISGM but in this case exemplified the values of Teamwork, Customer Focus, Accountability and Innovation.” Luke Halley, Field Services Manager, Southern

Northern — Scuds Communications: Vinnie Scuderi

Northern DC“We had an urgent job to be completed at Flagstone with a customer complaint attached to it. Vinnie rang the customer to inform them when he would be onsite and attended that morning. Due to his professional approach in getting the job done in a timely and efficient manner, the customer rang Telstra to say how happy and impressed she was with his work ethics and to pass on her thanks to Vinnie for a job well done.” Andrew Hobart, Team Manager, Northern

Western — MDR: Mike Roberts

“Mike has been subcontracting with ISGM for a while now and is an extremely capable cable jointer. Mike is an ex-Telstra technician and has also been involved with the joint remake program in SA. This is a subcontractor that gets his work and gets on with it without any delay. When Mike is jointing project work and there are faults outside of the scope which may impact on getting a Held Order completed, Mike will chase them down and get the lines serviceable. Committed to getting the work done to a high standard, Mike is truly an asset to ISGM and always willing to drop everything and help out.” Ron Parkin, Team Manager, Western SA

Safety update: Avoiding dog attacks

$

Thousands of dog attacks have been reported in residential streets and parks in recent years, so it pays to be mindful of aggressive dogs when working in the field.

Attacks can include an aggressive dog rushing or lunging at a person and in some cases, people have been hospitalised after suffering serious injuries.

Experts says all dogs have the potential to be aggressive and can bite or injure you.

Good practices to help in the prevention of being attacked by a dog:

 Always be aware and on the lookout for dogs and/or other animals when carrying out your initial inspection and risk assessment at each work site including phone calls to customer required during work planning.

 Check with the customer if dogs and/or other animals are on site during your call on approach to the job.

 Check for indicators of dogs and/or other animals, e.g. warning sign, barking, when you arrive at the job site.

 If on rural property, beep your horn a couple of times before exiting your vehicle.

 Request customers to keep dogs and/or other animals restrained and/or isolated from the area of work irrespective of comments such as “He’s friendly, He won’t hurt a flea”.

 Escalate to TM for support if needed.

Key points to remember if confronted by an unrestrained dog:

 Never run from or turn your back on any dog.

 Don’t stand still face to face during a threat, walk away slowly to safety whilst facing the dog.

 Don’t pat or trust any dog.

We’ve had some wonderful feedback from customers and Telstra on the performance of subcontracting companies. Congratulations to the companies and ISGM team members listed who have recently been commended!

Western WA

Customer feedback for Dean industries  - “The customer called to praise the work of the crew on site (Dean Industries) and said they had done a sensational job and cleaned up everything prior to leaving . She was happy to  have details explained to her with what was happening on site  and she couldn’t stop saying how happy she was with the work.”

Central

Subcontractor feedback for Kate Forbes and Greg Geoghegan, ISGM  - “Never have I dealt with a company that made the onboarding process so easy to manoeuvre through and the people involved Kate/Greg have been fantastic to work with.”

Telstra feedback for Tony Holman, Team Manager, ISGM  - “Thank you very much for suggesting the alternate route then following up with the developer to confirm a workable alignment for the conduit on the property and the required trenches.”

Southern

Telstra feedback for Jason Liesholt of Adam Proctor Installations – “On arrival I found that there was no underground pipe and a reactive order needed to be processed, this is usually a delay of up to 10 working days. Knowing that Jason had a leadin to complete for us nearby, I rang Jason after filling in the reactive leadin webform and asked him that if I provided him the ISGM reference number would he be able to squeeze in the leadin the following day.  Jason found the time and obviously this has meant that the customer has gone from upset to rapt that they’re able to start working as planned. The feedback I have had from both those customers at the above mentioned addresses is glowing, they have both commented that he has been extremely easy to deal with and informative as well as pleasant and professional in manner. I fully concur with those customers and many others who have approached me and asked to pass on thanks to Jason for his excellent help.”

Quality: Joints

$
0
0

The quality of joint repair across the network is a major focus for ISGM in 2015. As a company supplying services to ISGM, we expect your company to get this right the first time. Here are the essentials that your company is expected to perform for each joint:

Support all joints with a support bar

  • Support all joints, including ALIC joint closures with a support bar.
  • The support bar helps to keep the joint away from water that can enter the pit and damage the joint.
  • Note, you can claim CC7c12 for installing a missing support bar (include a photo of the supported joint to support your claim).

Use mesh bags to separate pairs

  • Mesh or onion bags must be used to group 10PRs.
  • The mesh bags assist in maintaining the integrity of the joint and make it easier to identify pairs.

Use a silica gel bag

  • A silica gel bag must be inserted into the netting bag and tied to the conductor bundles to be held in place. Sign and date the label.
  • The silica gel bag absorbs moisture in the joint to ensure integrity of the joint. The gel changes from yellow to green to indicate that the bag needs to be replaced. If you open a joint where the bag is green, replace the silica gel bag.

Cut conductors at correct length

  • The conductors need to be cut to the correct length to ensure the conductor can be housed correctly within the joint lid, and to be able to undertake repairs and testing of the joint.

Give the joint a haircut

  • On a fault task, 30PR and under joints need to be given a haircut, where required. On 50PR and above joints, the haircut relates to the individual 10PR bundle you are working on.

Fit unit collets & pair collets

  • The unit and pair collets must be fitted correctly.
  • They are extremely important in identifying the unit range and individual pairs within the unit range.

Use 3M tape, butyl rubber & electrical tape if joint cut

  • Remake joints up to and including 30PR as required in the first instance. If the joint has been cut below 3M tape, butyl rubber and electrical tape must be used to seal the cable sheath.
  • This keeps moisture out of the cables and assists in maintaining the integrity of the joint. Ensure you follow the CNI process.

Pressure test joint

  • After working in a joint, or replacing a joint, pressure test the joint with a Dome tester to ensure the joint is properly sealed.
  • If the joint fails, use the joint repair kit to add additional sealant to meet the standards.

Install Pride Tags

  • Pride tags must be filled out and installed each time you open or touch a joint. These tags indicate that work was completed in the network, when, and by whom.

Western — Telepower: Chris Kehoe

Chris Kehoe“Chris, while working in Maddington on a hot day, noticed that an elderly lady had collapsed on the footpath. Chris immediately went to her assistance, assisted her to a shady area and offered to call an ambulance, which she refused. Being concerned for her welfare he walked her home and called her son, who soon arrived and was very grateful for Chris’s help. Chris’s prompt actions have probably saved the elderly lady on that day from any further trauma. Well done Chris for having the courage to help another person in need.” Steve Bealey, Team Manager, Western WA
